August 2015, when our little boy was 3 years 3 months old, he had been showing signs of being ready to start potty training. So with the stork due to deliver his baby brother and then with L starting pre-school the following month, we started his potty training adventure. Our hope was that he would be nice and settled in pants for these big changes in his life. I’ve written a little poem about it, so here goes!
It was almost time to say goodbye, to the toddler nappy
Another step in growing up, our little boy so happy
We started very gently with a fab potty book to guide,
To show him what it was all about and what to put inside,
The new shiny white thing, a Pourty ours was named,
A clever shape to help Mummy & Daddy,
They too, new to this game *
We bought two Pourty and put them downstairs and upstairs as well,
To help little man get there in time, so that all would be swell.
He wouldn’t sit still for long at first,
But Cbeebies was a huge attraction,
For little man to park his botty for some potty action
In the day we kept his nappy on, but then we had to give him chance,
To show us how grown up he was with his shiny new big boy pants.
His new passion was super heroes, Hulk, Spiderman and Thor,
So this was a training idea we would use to explore,
Armed with super hero pants, stickers and praise,
We continued our pursuit of nappy-less, with motivation and we gave,
Stickers for a wee, little presents for a poo.
Stickers adorned the potty, a reward for doing so well,
Poo presents would someday do the trick, that we could also tell.
We had some accidents in pants and puddles on the floor,
But we knew he would get it, if we encouraged a little more,
He got the idea of wees on the potty within a week or two
He watched us pour it down the toilet
And together we shouted “Bye bye weee and poo!”
It seemed to deliver the message where the wee should go,
Number two’s took a bit longer, but presents helped to make him see
The potty or better yet the toilet is where we wanted them to be.
We tried to stay relaxed about it all and within 4 weeks he’d know
A Disney Cars step and seat helped him get his little behind,
Onto the toilet, he once feared, but now he was truly fine.
The next step was bed time, we wondered how to help him be dry,
We put a comfy rustle free protector on his bed,
Best not to worry his little head
We popped him in some dry nite pyjama pants, for a little while,
Till in the morning was little then no wee, this really made us smile.
Next step, our boy had tried so hard and so we took his nappies all away,
He had earned his big boy pants and now they were here to stay.
So, hope this has made you smile, my little potty rhyme,
And helps you on your journey to a happy potty time!
*To help put L’s wee and poo down the toilet that is, not for us to use the potty 😉 We were quite capable of using the toilet.
