It was the first visit to the dentist today for my for Little Man. It didn’t start well when the receptionist said they were running “about 25 minutes late, ok” I appreciate it happens, but never before had I a curious toddler to entertain for at least 30 minutes in a busy dental surgery whilst also hiding my nerves. Yes, I am a wimp when it comes to the dentist.
As it was a first appointment, we had to fill out a couple of forms. I could have put comedy answers for some of the questions, like occupation for example – “Toddler, finger nibbler” I did answer on the “Are there any nerves about today’s visit or any part of dentistry” – “Yes, wary of electric toothbrush noise” The dentist was shocked and thought I meant that we are using an electric toothbrush on our little boy’s teeth. I’m surprised she could read my writing since most was written whilst my boy wanted to help and hold the pen.
The friendly dentist asked us to sit in the chair. Little man was on my knee weighing up the room and the green gloved hands coming his way. Nope, he did not like these and was no way going to touch them or allow them near his mouth. A cuddly bunny which the dentist brought over and pretended to brush its teeth was a welcome distraction for a few moments.. then it was back to wriggling about on my knee. Switching the light on and off was merely an annoyance. Not like at home then, when this is fun! The dentist said “yes, 2-3 year olds are tricky”
I spotted a model mouth with a huge toothbrush in it. “Ooh what’s that over there” We went to investigate. It was a success – if only for 20 seconds for her to swiftly look in his mouth with her little mirror. Afterwards my little boy showed off his love of cleaning by brushing the floor with the huge toothbrush.
Happy with his teeth and saying what a nice smile he has, the dentist said she will see us in 6 months. We were sent off with a big Mater sticker and reminder of watching our sugar intake. They have a big campaign about healthy eating in the surgery at the moment. The dental nurse shocked me when she said that a little pot of fromage frais contains 2 teaspoonful’s of sugar!
Little Man likes the parrot thing off Mr Maker on CBeebies and used his new found saying to the dentist “Time to Go!” So we did. Happy to have been and to have got the ok on his little teeth. Hopefully next time he will feel a bit more relaxed next and look forward to his sticker

I really need to take my boys to the dentist – we haven’t been for a while. Mainly because last time, Ethan screamed in the dentist’s face! Our dentist isn’t so child friendly

Sounds like it was okay in the end. I used to take my boys from tinies before they were ready for their first appts just watching me have mine. And we had a couple of dentist story books too. So they were ok when they had their own appts. #weekendbloghop
Great post. My daughter had her first visit to the dentist a little while ago, and her second one last month. She was a bit wary too but the second time I brought her toothbrush with me – because she always opens her mouth for that!

Ahh thank you and thanks for having me at #WeekendBlogHop. Great idea about taking his toothbrush. Will do that for the next appointment and see what else I can do to help. He likes Topsy and Tim books, so I think I’ll get the dentist one
I’m glad the appointment went well. It sounds like your little man was very brave. I hate the dentist. I need to take my 13 month old bubba to the dentist soon… I’m dreading it. At the moment her molars are coming through and she won’t let anyone anywhere near her mouth. She screams so loudly when we brush her teeth that it sounds like we are torturing her. Any tips? Yeah it was alright in the end thanks
I called the surgery was he was much younger but they said to call back when he has more teeth. All of his molars aren’t through yet but they’re on their way. You could try a brushing teeth song – like one to the tune of Twinkle Twinkle – maybe it will be a distraction. We used to let little man play with the toothbrush at different times and you could see where he was chomping to get relief. Such a shame for them! When he was younger we used little dental wipes from Brush Baby – so it might be worth giving them a go. Hope her teething is over soon and your first appointment goes well. Xx
Kids and dentists are a funny thing!
Cameron’s first app went well, the second did not. He freaked out when the dentist blew air his mouth, proceeded to get up quickly. Say ‘No thank you to the dentist’ and off he went!

Thank you for having me! Ahh poor Cameron. At least he was still polite too despite freaking out. I hope his next appt is alright. I’m a bit afraid of the dentist. Tried really hard though to not let my feelings affect my little boy’s visit. Hopefully he will be ok in the next one and I’ll use the tips people have kindly shared on here
